World Cartoonist Day celebrated at SPPU’s Museum of Cartoon Art

Museum of Cartoon Art at Savitribai Phule Pune University had organised various events such as workshops, drawing competitions and exhibitions on the occasion of World Cartoonist Day on May 5. The museum of Cartoon Art located in the main building of SPPU has been set up under the University’s department of Media and Communications headed by Prof. Madhavi Reddy.

A cartoon drawing workshop was organised for children aged between 8 to 12 years. The workshop was conducted by eminent cartoonist Suraj ‘Eskay’ Sriram. 25 children participated in the workshop. The kids enjoyed learning the basics of cartooning. A small tour of the Museum of Cartoon Art was arranged for the kids and their parents.

‘The competition got a huge response with around 110 entries on various topics including civic issues, environmental pollution, climate change and political issues’ said Dr. Priya Gohad, curator of the museum.

The Museum of Cartoon Art exhibits works of renowned cartoonists in India and has a huge collection of vintage cartoons from the pre – independence era of Indian History. The museum also has a varied collection of books and research articles. It is open to the public during heritage walks on scheduled days. In addition the museum is open to all from Tuesday to Friday between 2 pm to 4 pm.
