YouTuber says family left just before explosions near Palm Jumeirah; relatives now stranded as flights halt

Popular YouTuber Dhruv Rathee has shared a dramatic account of how he narrowly escaped Dubai with his wife and child just hours before missile strikes and explosions were reported in the city amid the escalating Iran-Israel conflict.

Rathee revealed that he and his family were staying at a hotel directly across from the Fairmont Hotel on Palm Jumeirah when the situation suddenly deteriorated.

“An explosion and fire occurred at the Fairmont… just across the road from our hotel,” Rathee said, describing how a peaceful holiday atmosphere turned into a tense and alarming scene within minutes.

Mid-Air Shock

Despite rising tensions, Rathee and his immediate family managed to board an early morning flight. He said their aircraft took off without any immediate disruption. However, the seriousness of the situation became clear only after they were airborne.

Two to three hours into the journey, cabin crew informed passengers that a full-scale military conflict had broken out, with the United States and Israel attacking Iran. It was during the flight that Rathee learned the airspace they had just exited had been declared a restricted combat zone.

He later described this as the first time a war had felt “personal” to him.

Dubai Airport Chaos

After landing at his destination, Rathee was confronted with visuals from Dubai showing smoke engulfing parts of Dubai International Airport (DXB), one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs. Reports indicated that a concourse sustained damage and the airport was being evacuated.

He also referred to footage showing air defence systems intercepting drones near major landmarks, with debris reportedly causing fires near structures such as the Burj Al Arab. Flights were cancelled and operations were suspended as authorities responded to the unfolding crisis.

Family Members Stranded

The situation took a deeply personal turn when Rathee disclosed that several members of his extended family were not as fortunate. Their flights, scheduled just hours after his departure, were cancelled after the UAE government suspended operations.

He expressed concern for his friends and relatives, who remain stranded at the airport with no clarity on when flights will resume. The crisis has reportedly affected thousands of travellers, with airlines grounding flights and passengers facing uncertainty.

Rathee said the experience has left him shaken, adding that witnessing the sudden transformation of a global tourist hub into a potential conflict zone was deeply unsettling.

The developments come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, leading to airspace restrictions, flight suspensions and widespread disruption in international travel.
