Zomato's Warehouse in Hyderabad Discovers Food Labeled with Future Packing Dates

Food safety officials in Hyderabad found 18 kilos of button mushrooms marked as packed during an inspection of a Zomato warehouse. This inspection occurred on October 29, 2024, while the labeling was dated for October 30, according to an NDTV report.

The inspection took place at Zomato’s Hyperpure warehouse in Kukatpally, Hyderabad, which operates as a licensed Food Business Operator (FBO). This warehouse supplies various food items, including fruits, vegetables, and gourmet foods, to hotels and restaurants.

Labeling food with a “future date of packing” is considered a violation of food safety regulations. This inspection follows the discovery of serious food safety issues at sweet shops and other food outlets ahead of Diwali, prompted by health complaints.

During the inspection, officials found house flies in the warehouse and noted the lack of proper insect-proof screens, with some food handlers not wearing hair caps or aprons. Despite having a license and medical certificates for food handlers, along with pest control records, these issues were significant.

Zomato has not yet commented on the incident. These findings come after a June raid on a Blinkit warehouse, also owned by Zomato, where officials discovered unhygienic conditions, expired products, and potentially infested food items.

NDTV report on this issue quoted Blinkit stating, “We take safety and hygiene standards very seriously. We are closely working with our warehouse partner and the Food Safety Department to implement corrective actions from the findings.”
