Pune: Prohibitory Orders Issued Near Khadakwasla Canal to Curb Illegal Water Use

The four dams of the Khadakwasla project have 24.10 TMC usable water storage as of today. Out of this, a total of 11.99 TMC water is available to the city for drinking purposes. The available water storage is sufficient for the city only for six months i.e. till the end of May 2024. 

As a result, there is a possibility of facing acute water scarcity in summer. Pune residents have to use water very carefully from henceforth. 

Water is supplied to Pune from Khadakwasla, Temghar, Panshet and Varasgaon dams. The total useful water storage in these dams is 29.15 TMC. Out of this, there is currently 24.10 TMC stock remaining. As on this date last year, the total water storage was 26.35 TMC. Compared to this, the water storage has decreased by 2.25 TMC this year.

Pune citizens are actually using 20.49 TMC of water per year. According to this, an average of 1.70 TMC of water is required per month for Pune residents. 

There is now a large scale urbanization in the suburbs & they have increased as 23 more villages have been merged in the Pune Municipal Corporation. Hence, the city needs more than two TMC of water per month. The currently available water storage will be sufficient till the end of May 2024.
