Pune: On Wednesday evening, two farmers in Pune’s Indapur tehsil were discovered dead after they fell into a tunnel of the Nira Bhima stabilization project that was almost 300 feet deep. Late in the evening, the rescue squad entered the tunnel and recovered their bodies.

As per the information, the incident occurred when the farmers needed to lower the water pump in order to extract water from the tunnel and fell into it.

The Indapur tahsildar said that the Nira Bhima Stabilization Project’s tunnel construction is currently underway. Nearby farmers lower pumps into the tunnel to extract water for use in their crops. When the rope broke and they both fell into the tunnel, the two farmers were using a locally manufactured tractor-mounted crane to reach the water to install the pump. The mishap occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m.

The Krishna-Bhima stabilization project entails connecting river basins, implementing multiple lift-irrigation schemes, and providing water to Marathwada districts that are vulnerable to drought, such as Dharashiv and Beed districts.

NCP MP Supriya Sule has extended her condolences through X “A tunnel is being dug between Bhadalwadi and Tavshi in Indapur taluka for Nira Bhima Stabilization Project to connect Nira-Bhima river. In this tunnel, two farmers from Kazad fell 300 feet deep and died. This is a very sad and unfortunate incident. We all share in the grief that has befallen the families of these farmers. A heartfelt tribute to the deceased farmers.”
