A 21-year-old sailor from Maharashtra, Yash Avinash Deore, has gone missing from a merchant ship traveling from Saudi Arabia to India. His family has been desperately seeking answers since January 30, when they were informed about the incident.
Yash, a native of Deur village in Dhule district, joined the merchant navy last year. In June 2024, he was hired as an “Ordinary Seaman (OS)” through Swaraj Marines Pvt Ltd in Thane.
On January 30, his father received a call from the company stating that Yash was missing and a search was underway.
His elder brother, Nayan Deore, who works in Pune, rushed to Thane to meet company officials. “I did not get satisfactory answers, so I approached the Directorate General (DG) of Shipping in Mumbai.

They asked the company to provide full details. We received the ship captain’s report on the rescue operation, but till today, we have no concrete information about Yash,” Nayan said.
On February 2, Nayan filed a complaint at the Naupada police station in Thane, seeking help. Yash was on board “MT Athina I,” traveling from Oman to Alang, India. He last spoke to his family on January 28.
Two days later, they were told that Yash had fallen overboard on January 29.
Since the incident occurred in international waters, a missing person report has not been filed. However, the police have asked the company to provide all necessary details about his whereabouts. Yash’s family is still awaiting answers, hoping for any news about him.
