The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has approved the purchase of 500 buses for Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML).

The decision was made on Wednesday, with ₹230 crore allocated for the project. These buses will be added to the PMPML fleet within six months, officials said.

Currently, PMPML operates 503 buses on 122 routes in the PMRDA region. Many of these routes cover long distances, leading to high operational costs. Last year, PMPML requested ₹222 crore from PMRDA to cover these expenses, but the amount was not granted. Instead, PMPML demanded 500 new buses to improve services.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar had earlier announced the bus allocation. However, approval from the Urban Development Department was required. On Wednesday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis held a meeting with PMRDA officials, during which the proposal was finally cleared.

With this approval, PMPML is expected to strengthen its services in the PMRDA region. The new buses will help manage long-distance routes more efficiently, reducing the financial burden on PMPML.

The decision aims to improve public transport for thousands of daily commuters.
