27 Hospitalized, One Underwent Angioplasty After Mumbai Marathon
Mumbai, January 20, 2025: The 20th edition of the Mumbai Marathon, held on Sunday, saw 27 participants being hospitalized due to various medical issues during the event. Nearly 2,018 runners required medical attention, with common issues including muscle cramps, dehydration, and minor injuries. Among the hospitalized, one individual suffered from heart complications and had to undergo an emergency angioplasty at Bombay Hospital.
The marathon, a much-anticipated event every January’s third Sunday, saw participation from runners across Mumbai and the globe, including celebrities, disabled athletes, youth, and senior citizens. To ensure timely medical care, over 600 volunteers, including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and support staff, were deployed by the Asian Heart Institute., according to a news report in Loksatta.
Out of the 2,018 runners requiring assistance, 55% faced muscle cramps, dehydration, and minor injuries. The 27 hospitalized participants included cases of heart attacks, bleeding, severe dehydration, and fractures. Dr. Santosh Kumar Dora, a cardiologist at the Asian Heart Institute, shared that treatment was provided to 16 individuals, and they were discharged. The remaining patients are in stable condition.
Among the hospitalized, two individuals at Bombay Hospital experienced severe dehydration, leading to falls and injuries. They are currently being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) and are on life-support systems. Additionally, a 48-year-old runner, who experienced chest pain during the marathon, was immediately admitted to Bombay Hospital. Upon examination, the need for urgent angioplasty was identified, which was successfully carried out.
The other hospitals involved in the treatment of marathon-related cases include Lilavati, Poddar, Jaslok, GT, and Saifee Hospitals. The marathon saw approximately 62,000 participants this year, with a well-coordinated medical response in place to address any emergencies.
