The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the establishment of the 8th Pay Commission to revise the salaries of central government employees and pensions for retirees. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decision, adding that the chairman and two members of the commission will be appointed soon.

Pay commissions, set up every decade, are tasked with revising the salary structure of central government employees and determining pension payments. The 7th Pay Commission, established in 2016, is set to complete its term in 2026.

The 7th Pay Commission brought significant changes, including an increase in the minimum basic pay from ₹7,000 to ₹18,000 per month and a rise in the minimum pension from ₹3,500 to ₹9,000. The maximum salary and pension also saw hikes, reaching ₹2,50,000 and ₹1,25,000, respectively.

The 8th Pay Commission is expected to continue this trend of improving the financial well-being of government employees and pensioners across the country.
