9-Km Kondhwa–Wadki Link Road Planned to Ease Pune–Saswad Traffic, Enable Direct Bypass Travel
Pune, May 1, 2026: In a major step to reduce traffic congestion on the busy Pune–Saswad route, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is planning a 9-kilometre link road connecting Kondhwa to Wadki Chowk. The proposed road aims to allow vehicles to travel towards Saswad, Solapur, and Satara without entering the city’s internal road network.
At present, commuters heading from Pune to nearby regions such as Saswad and Solapur are forced to pass through congested internal roads, leading to heavy traffic buildup. The new link road, starting from Khadi Machine Chowk in Kondhwa, is expected to serve as a key alternative route and strengthen connectivity in South Pune.

Why Is The Project Needed ?
Officials said that before construction begins, a consultant agency will be appointed to carry out land surveys, geographical assessments, and audits of properties along the proposed alignment. While the ongoing widening of the Katraj–Kondhwa road is expected to provide some relief, authorities believe a dedicated bypass route is essential for long-term traffic management.
The planned corridor will function as a bypass for heavy and commercial vehicles, reducing their movement through narrow city roads. This is expected to streamline traffic by separating local and outstation vehicle movement.
Currently, vehicles travelling between Satara, Saswad, and Solapur highways are routed through congested city stretches. The new link road will enable smoother, uninterrupted travel, helping ease pressure on existing routes.
Project Timeline and Status
The link road was part of the Regional Plan but had remained pending for years. PMC officials have now indicated that a detailed project report (DPR) is being prepared, and efforts are underway to fast-track execution.
Residents have reported a surge in heavy vehicle traffic in areas like Khadi Machine Chowk and Kondhwa over the past few months, with many drivers opting for routes via Bopdev Ghat to reach Saswad. This has further strained already overloaded roads.
Citizens have urged authorities to prioritise development of connecting routes to Saswad, Solapur, and Satara to address growing traffic challenges.
Meanwhile, the PMC expects to finalise compensation for landowners affected by the Katraj–Kondhwa road widening within the next month. Work has already been accelerated in stretches where the civic body has possession of land.
