The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) is calling for better safety measures for healthcare workers and the enforcement of the Central Healthcare Protection Act. Resident doctors at Pune’s BJ Government Medical College will start an indefinite strike on Tuesday. This action is in response to the recent rape and murder of a junior doctor at R G Kar Medical College in Kolkata. Dr. Shivaji Munde, President of MARD, announced a protest march at 11 am.

Dr. Munde expressed sadness and anger over the tragic incident involving the Kolkata doctor. He said the strike would lead to a halt in elective services, such as outpatient services, elective surgeries, and lab work, but emergency services will continue.

Hospitals in Delhi and other cities are holding candlelight vigils and protests to condemn the attack on the Kolkata doctor.

In their announcement, Dr. Munde, Dr. Aakash Rade (General Secretary), and Dr. Dastagir Jamadar (Vice-President) called for better security, including working CCTV cameras and well-trained security guards. They also demanded a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident by a central authority, without any police brutality against protesting doctors.

MARD is urging all local units to support the strike and push for improved safety and justice for healthcare workers, as stated by Dr. Ajay Vairagkar, Vice-President of MARD.
