Pune: In a major medical milestone, Sassoon General Hospital successfully performed a kidney transplant on a 52-year-old man from Hadapsar, Pune. The patient, who had been battling kidney disease since 2015, underwent the surgery on October 9 at a cost far lower than that charged by private hospitals.
The procedure, which typically costs around Rs 10 lakh in private facilities, was completed for approximately Rs 3 lakh, thanks to the Mahatma Jotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana, a government healthcare scheme aimed at reducing financial strain on patients.
The transplant was made possible by a team of expert doctors, including Dr. Niranjan Ambekar, Dr. Sandeep Morkhandikar, and Dr. Suresh Patankar. The kidney was donated by the patient’s wife, and the entire process, from investigations to post-operative care, was closely monitored by a nephrologist.
A hospital spokesperson highlighted that Sassoon General Hospital offers affordable kidney and liver transplants through government schemes like the Mahatma Jotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana. The scheme covers the cost of medicines, surgical materials, and post-operative examinations, significantly lowering the financial burden for patients. Additionally, social organizations often contribute towards the cost of these surgeries, and patients are provided with essential medications for the first year post-transplant.
Patients in need of affordable transplant options are encouraged to reach out to Sassoon Hospital, which continues to provide critical healthcare services at a fraction of the cost charged by private institutions.
