A 61-year-old retired special assistant of a public sector bank fell prey to a cybercrook, losing Rs 33 lakh after applying for a credit card through a link sent on her Facebook page. The woman, a resident of Shivdarshan area, thought the link was from her former employer and followed the instructions, unknowingly granting the crook access to her cellphone.

On December 8, the woman received a call from an unknown number, claiming to be a representative of her former bank. The caller sent her an Android Package Kit (APK) file, asking her to fill in her bank account details. The woman downloaded the file, granted permission, and submitted her details, unaware of the impending doom.

The next day, the crook siphoned off Rs 33 lakh from her three bank accounts through six transactions using a phone banking service. The woman realized the con when she received an alert about a Rs 5 lakh debit from her account. A complaint was lodged with the Parvati police on Wednesday.
