PUNE: Construction on the 53.4km Pune-Shirur six-lane elevated highway is set to commence by June or July, as per Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) officials. The Rs 7,515-crore project has completed its second pre-bid process, with tender allocation expected in April or May.

“We are progressing as planned and anticipate starting work by mid-year after financial closure,” an MSIDC official stated on Tuesday.

The project aims to ease congestion and improve road conditions on the Pune-Shirur route. It will be built under the design, build, finance, operate, and transfer (DBFOT) model with a 30-year concession period. Deputy CM and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar highlighted the project in the state Budget 2025-26, emphasizing its role in enhancing connectivity.

Approved by the state cabinet in 2024, the project will require 41 hectares of land and is expected to be completed within four years. It will eventually connect to the Samruddhi Highway and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

The elevated highway was initially under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) but was later handed over to MSIDC following an MoU between the central and state governments. MSIDC reissued tenders after NHAI’s earlier process was canceled.

Officials confirmed that minimal land acquisition would be required as the elevated corridor will run along the existing Pune-Shirur highway. The project will also include improvements to the current road network.

The commuters on Pune Shirur road are hoping that the MSIDC completes the project within the proposed timeline.
