FDA Launches Drive To Check Ice Quality At Pune Juice Stalls
Pune – With rising temperatures, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), Pune, has initiated an inspection drive to assess the quality of ice used at juice stalls, kulfi vendors, and roadside cold drink sellers across Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.
FDA Tightens Ice Quality Checks
According to officials, 15 food inspectors have been directed to examine the ice used in beverages and frozen treats, ensuring that vendors comply with regulations and use only edible ice.
Authorities have raised concerns about the use of industrial ice, which is cheaper but not meant for consumption. Unlike edible ice, which is clear and white, industrial ice has a bluish tint and is used for storage and cooling purposes.
Public Advised to Stay Vigilant
Given the large number of vendors across the city, officials acknowledge that complete monitoring is difficult. Citizens are encouraged to exercise caution and verify the ice quality before purchasing cold beverages from roadside stalls.
Earlier, the FDA had mandated that industrial ice manufacturers add blue dye to differentiate it from edible ice. The current drive includes checking compliance with this directive.
FDA’s Continued Efforts
With the increasing demand for cold beverages in summer, the FDA plans to intensify inspections to curb the use of unsafe ice. Authorities urge the public to be cautious and opt for reliable vendors to avoid potential health risks.
