Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) launched a major anti-encroachment drive in key areas of the city, targeting prominent establishments including the iconic Goodluck Café and Vaishali Restaurant. The action took place in the bustling Fergusson College Road, Jangli Maharaj Road (JM Road), and Deccan areas.

The PMC’s Encroachment Department carried out demolition work at Goodluck Café in Deccan, a heritage eatery cherished by generations of Punekars. The civic body used JCB machines to demolish unauthorized extensions outside the café, which were reportedly built on the side margins. These included additional seating areas and semi-permanent structures like tin roofs, all deemed illegal by PMC authorities.

According to officials, Goodluck Café had violated municipal norms by expanding into open public space. The café’s extended seating area, built to accommodate more customers, was found to be in breach of setback rules.

Following action at Goodluck Café, PMC officials moved to the equally popular Vaishali Restaurant on Fergusson Road. Authorities found encroachments in the form of extended external structures, which were also removed during the operation.

Both Goodluck Café and Vaishali Restaurant are considered cultural landmarks in Pune. Goodluck Café, operational for several decades, is famed for its bun maska and Irani chai, attracting food lovers from across the city and beyond. The eatery’s nostalgic charm—featuring old-style seating, marble counters, and signature dishes—has made it a favorite across age groups, from college students to senior citizens.

PMC officials stated that the drive was part of a larger initiative to tackle unauthorized constructions in key commercial zones. Establishments violating development control rules will face strict action, they added.
