Thunderstorms, Gusty Winds Expected; IMD Predicts Rainfall in Multiple Districts
After a dry and humid weekend, Mumbai is set to experience welcome relief as pre-monsoon showers begin today. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and neighbouring districts — Thane, Raigad, and Palghar — forecasting moderate rainfall and thunderstorms with gusty winds starting Monday and intensifying on Tuesday.
The weather bureau has predicted that light rainfall will start today, gradually increasing to moderate showers by tomorrow. Thane will remain under yellow alert until Wednesday, indicating prolonged wet weather across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Expanding beyond the Konkan belt, yellow alerts have also been sounded for several other districts in Maharashtra. More significantly, an orange alert has been issued for parts of Western Maharashtra, including Nashik, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, and Sangli, suggesting the likelihood of heavier rainfall in these regions.
According to Shubhangi Bhute, Director of IMD Mumbai, this spell of rainfall is characteristic of pre-monsoon activity. “A low-level trough is currently causing wind pattern changes and intermittent rain. These are classic indicators of pre-monsoon showers. Monsoon is expected to reach the Andaman Islands by May 13 and Kerala by May 28,” she said.
This weather development follows last week’s unseasonal showers, which brought Mumbai its wettest May in four years. Between May 6 and May 9, Colaba recorded 48.7 mm of rainfall and Santacruz 38.4 mm, with a remarkable dip in temperatures. Colaba logged its coldest May day since 1951, recording a minimum temperature of 22.2°C, while Santacruz dropped to 20.6°C.
After a dry weekend that saw maximum temperatures soar — 34.6°C in Santacruz and 33.2°C in Colaba — the forecast offers much-needed relief for city residents.
Mumbai typically sees the onset of the southwest monsoon around June 11. These early showers not only provide respite from heat and humidity but also signal the transition into the full-fledged monsoon season.
