In a major infrastructure boost to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Central Railway has finalised the much-anticipated fourth rail line between Panvel and Karjat. The project, which will enhance regional connectivity and bring the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport significantly closer to Pune, is slated for completion by December 2025.

According to Central Railway officials, the final Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the 29-kilometre Panvel–Karjat (Chowk) fourth line was submitted to the Railway Board on April 7. The estimated project cost is around ₹491 crore.

The fourth track will complement the existing rail infrastructure, easing congestion along one of the busiest railway corridors in the region. Currently, the older line is predominantly used by goods trains and a limited number of long-distance passenger trains. With the new addition, the route will be doubled to enhance overall train capacity and improve travel times.

Notably, this new line is in addition to the two suburban railway lines under construction by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation, also expected to be completed by the end of 2025. The new alignment will feature some of the longest tunnels and bridges in the Mumbai suburban railway network, adding to the project’s significance.

As part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project-3 (MUTP-3), the Panvel–Karjat corridor is expected to revolutionize suburban commuting and improve long-distance connectivity between Pune and Navi Mumbai.
