Monsoon Arrives Early in Maharashtra, Set to Hit Mumbai in 2-3 Days; IMD Issues Orange Alert for Several Districts
Monsoon in Maharashtra: Early Arrival Brings Heavy Rain Alerts Across the State
Pune: In a surprising turn, the Southwest Monsoon has arrived in Maharashtra nearly 10 days ahead of schedule, following its early onset in Kerala. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), monsoon conditions are currently active in parts of Konkan and South Maharashtra, and it is likely to reach Mumbai within the next 2 to 3 days. The early onset has prompted weather alerts across multiple districts, with warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coming days.
Monsoon Reaches Devgad, Konkan Ahead of Schedule
As per IMD officials, the northern limit of the monsoon has currently reached Devgad in Maharashtra. This development marks a premature entry compared to the typical schedule. Experts predict substantial rainfall across the state in the coming days, offering relief to farmers while also posing challenges for municipal bodies and emergency services in terms of flood preparedness and infrastructure resilience.
Heavy Rainfall Alert for Konkan and Western Maharashtra
The IMD has issued a heavy to very heavy rainfall warning for parts of Konkan and western Maharashtra, including the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds. Pre-monsoon showers are currently affecting Mumbai and the Konkan coast, with the official monsoon expected to follow shortly.
Orange Alert for Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune, Satara, and Kolhapur
An Orange Alert has been issued for Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts, along with the ghat regions of Pune, Satara, and Kolhapur. The alert will remain effective for Raigad until May 26, while it will continue for the other districts for the next five days. The alert advises residents to prepare for intense rain and possible localised flooding in hilly regions.
Yellow Alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar
In addition to the Orange Alerts, a Yellow Alert has been issued for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and several other parts of the state. The forecast includes thunderstorms, gusty winds up to 60 km/h, and moderate to heavy rainfall. The IMD has urged citizens and local authorities to remain vigilant. According to the BMC, Mumbai recorded 37 mm of rain over the last 24 hours (till 8 AM), indicating a gradual intensification of monsoon activity.
Monsoon Breaks Record in Kerala
The monsoon officially arrived in Kerala on May 23, making it one of the earliest onsets in the past 16 years. The typical date for monsoon arrival in Kerala is June 1. The last time it arrived this early was in 2009 and 2001. The earliest ever monsoon arrival on the Indian mainland was recorded in 1918, when Kerala witnessed its onset on May 11.
As monsoon activity intensifies, both citizens and authorities across Maharashtra are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions to mitigate the impact of sudden and intense rainfall.
