133-km Pune-Nashik Industrial Expressway to boost connectivity, reduce travel time, and promote economic growth across three districts

The long-awaited Pune-Nashik Industrial Expressway is gaining momentum, with the Maharashtra government preparing to send the final proposal for approval. Once completed, the new expressway will cut the current five-hour travel time between Pune and Nashik to just three hours, transforming regional connectivity and economic activity.

The expressway will link Pune, Ahilyanagar (formerly Ahmednagar), and Nashik districts, covering a total length of 133 kilometers. The estimated cost of this mega infrastructure project is ₹28,429 crore, and construction is expected to be completed within three years once it receives cabinet clearance.

Approval and Design Finalized

The project received design approval from the state government in February 2023. It will also connect to the Surat-Chennai Highway, making it a critical link for inter-state vehicular traffic and logistics. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) and Feasibility Study have already been completed, and the proposal will now be sent by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) for final government approval.

Expressway Highlights

  • 12 major flyovers will be constructed across rivers and streams.
  • Key interchanges will be set up at Chimbli, Chakan, and Pabal in Pune, and at Rajuri, Khandarmal, Sakur, Machi, and Kasare in Ahilyanagar and Nashik.
  • The expressway will pass through Khed, Shirur, Ambegaon, and Junnar talukas in Pune, and Sangamner in Ahilyanagar.
  • 1545 hectares of land will be acquired for the project.
  • Shirdi route integration is also under consideration.

Impact on Existing Rail Project

The Pune-Nashik Semi High-Speed Rail Project, which has been facing delays, may be affected by the expressway’s accelerated progress. In a June 2023 meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar directed authorities to assess whether the land earmarked for the rail project could be used for the expressway instead. This evaluation is currently underway.

Economic & Regional Boost

The expressway is expected to spur industrial growth in key urban centers like Pune, Ahilyanagar, and Nashik, enhancing trade, employment, and logistics. Local businesses, especially in manufacturing and transport sectors, are likely to benefit significantly.

Official Statement

According to Ashok Bhalekar, Chief Engineer at the Road Development Authority, the state had already issued directives for the expressway’s detailed planning. “Once we receive final cabinet approval, we will move forward with implementation,” he confirmed.

With its promise to significantly reduce travel time, improve inter-district connectivity, and fuel regional development, the Pune-Nashik Industrial Expressway is being seen as a game-changer for Maharashtra’s infrastructure and economy.
