Tragic Incident: Maharashtra Teen Dies by Suicide After Mother Refuses to Buy Mobile Phone
16-year-old police aspirant Atharva Tayde jumped from a hill in Tisgaon following repeated denials for a phone
In a deeply distressing incident, a 16-year-old boy named Atharva Gopal Tayde died by suicide after his mother repeatedly declined his request to buy him a mobile phone. The tragic event occurred on Sunday in Tisgaon, located in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district of Maharashtra.
Atharva, a resident of Sajapur Shivar (native to Jalgaon Jamod, Buldhana district), was currently staying in Waluj and undergoing training in preparation for the police recruitment examination. For several days, he had been pleading with his mother to get him a phone. On Sunday, after another denial, he reportedly went to a nearby hill in Tisgaon and jumped off.
Local residents rushed him to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival. The incident triggered a wave of shock and sadness across the area.
This is not the first time Maharashtra has witnessed such a tragedy. In a similar case last year, 15-year-old Vishwajeet Ramesh Chamdanwale died by suicide at home after his mother refused to gift him a phone on his birthday. His mother and sister were asleep when the incident occurred.
In another incident from July 2024, an 18-year-old from Navi Mumbai took his own life after his father bought him a low-cost Vivo phone instead of the high-end iPhone he had requested, reportedly costing around Rs 1.5 lakh. The young man became depressed after the purchase and eventually ended his life.
These repeated cases underscore a rising concern around youth mental health, material pressures, and the urgent need for parental guidance, communication, and mental health awareness across all sections of society.
