Mumbai, August 29, 2025: The Maharashtra government has set up a committee to frame a comprehensive policy for onion and tomato farming, addressing long-standing economic challenges and farmer demands.

The panel is headed by Pasha Patel, president of the Agriculture Costs and Prices Commission, who was appointed on July 18. Experts were added to the committee on August 26.

The committee will review key issues related to onion and tomato cultivation, both of which hold major economic and political significance in the state. Members include Parashram Patil, Dikpal Girase, Chandrakant Chavan, and Rahul Rathi.

The panel will submit its recommendations to the government after deliberations.

Onion, largely cultivated in western Maharashtra districts like Nashik, is known for its price fluctuations that often draw national attention. Tomato, regarded as a cash crop, is widely grown in districts like Pune.

Farmers have been pressing for the implementation of minimum support prices (MSP) to safeguard them against market volatility.
