Online Tenancy Registration Now Mandatory – Key Changes in the New Process
Pune, August 31, 2025 – The Registration and Stamps Department has announced a major shift in the tenancy agreement registration process, making it mandatory for citizens to register rental agreements exclusively through the official online portal.
The decision, implemented with immediate effect, cancels the appointment of Authorized Service Providers (ASP) who previously assisted citizens with home or office visits for document registration.
According to the circular issued by the Inspector General of Registration, this change aims to ensure transparency, security, and efficiency in tenancy documentation.
Earlier, ASPs were introduced in 2014 due to limited digital literacy among citizens. However, with increasing tech awareness and improved online facilities, the department believes direct portal-based registration is now feasible and user-friendly.
The decision comes amid reports of irregularities and complaints against several service providers. The Association of Service Providers, however, has expressed strong opposition. State President Sachin Singvi termed the move “shocking,” citing that nearly 3,500 service providers could face unemployment, with around 10 lakh tenancy agreements being registered annually through them.
Officials have assured that the new online system is simple and accessible, aiming to speed up the registration process and improve administrative efficiency. While citizens may benefit from faster digital services, discontent brews among displaced service providers.
