MSRTC Extends PPP Land Lease Period To 98 Years To Boost Revenue And Stability
MSRTC Declares: Stranded Passengers Can Board Any Bus Without Extra Charges
September 4, 2025: The Maharashtra government has revised its policy on the commercial utilisation of surplus land owned by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). Under the new rules, the lease period for projects developed through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model has been extended from 60 years to 98 years.
Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik announced on Wednesday that the move aims to enhance the corporation’s revenue and ensure its long-term financial stability.
“As per the updated policy, MSRTC’s surplus land will now be leased for 49 years, with an option to extend for another 49 years. Developers will be required to share a fixed portion of the income or commercial returns generated with MSRTC,” Sarnaik explained.
He further stated that the decision would make projects, especially in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, more financially viable. The policy will also allow commercial use of land as per DCPR-2034 and UDCPR-2020 regulations.
According to the minister, the move will bring idle land into productive use, give momentum to new development projects, and provide MSRTC with additional revenue to strengthen its services for passengers.
