With humour and festive flair, the Embassy captures India’s collective dilemma — is Diwali on October 20 or 21?

In a lighthearted take on the nationwide debate over Diwali 2025’s actual date, the French Embassy in India has shared a hilarious video that perfectly sums up everyone’s confusion — is the festival of lights on October 20 or October 21?

The video, posted on the Embassy’s official X handle, reads: “Confused about the Diwali date? So are we! But one thing’s certain: lights, joy, and sweets await! Watch our special video on Deepavali — the festival of lights.”

The clip reportedly shows Embassy staff in humorous, make-believe situations that play on the ongoing date dilemma. One employee jokes, “Maine do kurte le liya,” preparing for both possible Diwali days. Another splits a flower bouquet in half to deliver one portion on each day, while yet another employee is left wondering which day to attend a “Diwali party” since the invitation didn’t specify the date.

The confusion stems from a rare celestial alignment this year. Traditionally, Diwali (Deepavali) falls on the 15th day of the Hindu lunar month of Kartik, marking the Amavasya (new moon) night, considered the darkest night of the year. However, in 2025, the Amavasya Tithi begins at 3:44 p.m. on October 20 and ends at 5:54 p.m. on October 21, causing uncertainty over which date marks the main celebration.

Most Panchang calculations suggest that October 20 will be observed as the main Diwali day, including Lakshmi Puja. Still, as the French Embassy’s witty video shows, many are playing it safe and celebrating twice.
