Beed Tragedy: Six-Year-Old Loses Vision in One Eye While Trying to Relight a Firecracker
Diwali celebrations turn tragic in Beed after a firecracker explodes in a child’s hand; doctors urge strict parental supervision.
Diwali, the festival of joy and light, turned into a night of grief for a family in Beed, Maharashtra. On Monday evening, a six-year-old boy sustained severe injuries when a firecracker exploded in his hand. Believing the firecracker had gone out, he attempted to relight it, and it burst unexpectedly.
The child was immediately taken to Beed Civil Hospital and later shifted to a private hospital for advanced treatment. On Tuesday, doctors confirmed that the explosion caused irreparable damage to his cornea, resulting in the complete loss of vision in one eye.
Following the incident, doctors made an emotional appeal to parents, stressing the need for extreme caution and supervision when children handle firecrackers. They emphasized that such tragedies can be avoided with awareness and preventive measures.
Safety Tips for Children While Bursting Firecrackers
- Children should burst firecrackers only under the close supervision of parents or responsible adults. Never leave them unattended.
- If a firecracker fails to ignite the first time, do not attempt to relight it. Instead, pour water on it and move away.
- Avoid dressing children in nylon, polyester, or synthetic materials while bursting crackers. These fabrics catch fire quickly. Cotton clothing is a safer choice.
- Make sure children wear proper footwear—shoes or sandals—to protect their feet from burns or injuries.
