Tension, heartbreak, and mistrust took a deadly turn in Mumbai’s Parel area on Friday morning when a 24-year-old man, Sonu Barai, brutally attacked his ex-girlfriend Manisha Yadav, also 24, before killing himself moments later. The horrific incident, which began on a busy street near Chinchpokli and ended inside a nearby nursing home, has left the neighbourhood stunned.

According to investigators, Barai and Yadav had been in a relationship for almost nine years and lived in the same locality. However, their bond had been strained for several months, with Barai growing increasingly suspicious of Yadav’s fidelity. The relationship reportedly began to unravel after Yadav followed another man on Instagram — something that triggered Barai’s insecurities and constant accusations.

Police said the couple decided to separate about eight to ten days ago, but Barai struggled to accept the breakup. On Friday morning, he informed his mother that he was stepping out, quietly picked up a kitchen knife from their home, and left. Later, he contacted Yadav and asked her to meet him near Aastha Nursing Home in Parel, saying he wanted to see her one last time.

Around 10:30 a.m., the two met on Dattaram Lad Marg near Chinchpokli. Witnesses recalled seeing the pair arguing intensely before the situation turned violent. “I was right behind them when the woman screamed and ran towards the nursing home. He chased her,” one eyewitness told police.

Barai then followed Yadav into the nursing home and continued to stab her multiple times in front of horrified staff members and bystanders. The scene quickly descended into chaos as people tried to stop him—some even picked up bamboo sticks and stones—but he refused to stop his assault. After repeatedly stabbing Yadav until she collapsed, Barai turned the knife on himself and slit his throat as the crowd rushed toward him.

Both were immediately taken to JJ Hospital in Byculla, where doctors declared Barai dead on arrival. Yadav, who had suffered multiple stab wounds, was admitted to the ICU but succumbed to her injuries nearly seven hours later, around 5 p.m. A postmortem examination has been ordered to determine the full extent of her injuries.

Police officials believe the attack was premeditated. “Going by the statements of eyewitnesses, it’s clear he came determined to kill. Even when people shouted and tried to stop him, he didn’t stop,” said a Kala chowki police officer.

Senior police officials, including Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 4) R. Ragasudha, reached the spot soon after the incident. As a precaution, an additional police team was deployed at KEM Hospital. The weapon used in the murder has been recovered, and investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from surrounding shops and the nursing home to trace the sequence of events. Statements from witnesses, staff, and family members have also been recorded.

Relatives of the accused shared that Barai had been mentally disturbed in the weeks leading up to the incident and had even spoken about seeking therapy. Both families were aware of the couple’s long relationship and had reportedly discussed the idea of counselling to help them reconcile.

Amid the chaos, Byculla traffic police constable Kiran Suryavanshi acted quickly to help. He was responding to an illegal parking complaint nearby when locals informed him about the attack inside the nursing home. He rushed to the scene and helped take Yadav to the hospital, though by that time Barai had already inflicted fatal injuries on himself.

Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). An abated summary report—which is filed when the accused has died—will be submitted once the investigation concludes, officials confirmed.
