In a shocking incident along the Pune-Solapur highway, Pune Rural Police have arrested a 30-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a woman after offering her a lift on his motorcycle. The crime reportedly took place in the early hours of October 10 near Bhigwan, sending shockwaves through the local community.

The accused has been identified as Jakya Kondkya Chavan, a resident of Malwadi Lingali in Daund tehsil. He was presented before the court, which subsequently remanded him to police custody until October 26, officials confirmed on Friday. According to the police, the 22-year-old victim, who works as a dancer, was returning to Pune after completing a performance in Akluj. Around 3:20 am, she was stranded on the highway waiting for transportation when Chavan stopped his motorcycle and offered to drop her in Pune. Trusting his offer, the woman accepted the ride.

However, during the journey, when they reached the Malad village area near the railway bridge, the accused allegedly stopped his vehicle abruptly. He then dragged the woman into nearby bushes, where he reportedly raped her before fleeing the scene.

The traumatised victim managed to reach the Bhigwan Police Station, where she lodged a complaint against an unidentified person. Acting promptly, the Pune Rural Police formed three special teams comprising officers from Daund Police Station, Bhigwan Police Station, and the Local Crime Branch to trace the culprit.

Investigators prepared a sketch of the suspect and examined several CCTV cameras along the highway to track his movements. Their efforts paid off when, on October 18, the police received a tip about the accused’s whereabouts. A search operation was launched the same day, leading to Chavan’s arrest from his village.

Assistant Police Inspector Vinod Mahangade from Bhigwan Police Station stated that during questioning, the accused confessed to the crime. Further investigation revealed that Chavan is a repeat offender, previously booked in a house break-in case by Daund Police. Authorities also seized the motorcycle used in the crime.
