No Red, No Green, No Stops: India’s First City Without Traffic Lights
Traffic in one Rajasthan city has undergone a dramatic transformation, creating a travel experience that is almost entirely uninterrupted. Residents, daily commuters, and thousands of students moving through the city now benefit from smooth, signal-free roads thanks to innovative urban planning and smart infrastructure upgrades.
The Urban Improvement Trust (UIT) led this ambitious initiative, envisioning a system where vehicles rarely need to stop.
By building a network of interconnected ring roads, motorists can bypass previously congested intersections, reducing travel time and easing traffic congestion across the city.
To further enhance mobility, over two dozen flyovers and underpasses have been constructed at major junctions. These additions allow vehicles to maintain continuous movement without waiting at traffic lights, helping lower the risk of accidents and reduce fuel consumption while promoting a more environmentally friendly approach to commuting.
The city’s achievement serves as a model for other urban centers grappling with traffic gridlock. It demonstrates that thoughtful planning and infrastructure investment can replace traditional signal-dependent systems with safer, more efficient solutions.
Despite accommodating a large population and a heavy influx of daily commuters, this city now boasts a traffic ecosystem where stoppages are almost nonexistent.
