Leg gets wedged in grille two floors below; hour-long rescue by fire teams saves 57-year-old

A 57-year-old man in Surat narrowly escaped death after falling from the 10th floor of his apartment building early Thursday morning, only to have his fall arrested when his leg became stuck in a grille two floors below. The dramatic incident unfolded at the Times Galaxy building in Jahangirpura and was captured on video, showing the man hanging upside down as rescue teams worked to free him.

The incident occurred on December 25th at a multi-story residential building and lost his footing and fell, what would have been a fatal plunge was prevented, when his leg became lodged in the protective grille of a flat on the eighth floor, leaving him suspended in mid-air.

Videos from the scene show man hanging precariously, his body inverted and his leg painfully wedged in the metal grille. Residents of the building quickly alerted the fire brigade after noticing the alarming situation. Teams from three fire stations — Jahangirpura, Palanpur and Adajan — rushed to the spot to carry out a coordinated rescue.

Fire officials first secured Adiya from a higher floor using ropes and a safety belt to prevent further movement or injury. A safety net was also deployed below as an added precaution. The rescue operation required careful manoeuvring to free his trapped leg without causing further harm, and the effort continued for nearly an hour.

Onlookers and residents watched anxiously as firefighters worked methodically to bring him to safety. Relief was visible among those present when Adiya was finally pulled inside and placed on a stretcher. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Officials said the man sustained injuries due to the fall and prolonged suspension but was conscious when rescued. He is currently undergoing treatment, and his condition is being monitored.

The incident has sparked concern among residents about window safety in high-rise buildings, especially for elderly occupants. While the exact circumstances leading to the fall are being assessed, authorities have urged residents to ensure adequate safety measures near windows and balconies to prevent similar accidents.

The quick response by neighbours and the coordinated effort of multiple fire brigade teams were widely credited for averting a tragedy that could have ended very differently.
