Residents of Udupi were left shaken after a frightening road accident unfolded in broad daylight, when a stationary car unexpectedly rolled backwards and crashed into nearby vehicles. The incident, which quickly turned chaotic, took place on the morning of December 29, 2025, on Jamia Masjid Road, close to Omega Cushion and near the Irody Building area in the city.

According to reports, the car had been parked along the roadside when the driver, identified as Avi Shanubagh, entered the vehicle. Before he could properly settle in and shut the door, the car suddenly went out of control. CCTV footage from the area shows the vehicle first shifting slightly and then reversing at speed, slamming into a two-wheeler and an autorickshaw that were nearby.

The impact left bike riders and an autorickshaw driver injured, creating panic on the busy stretch of road. The most seriously injured biker was rushed to a private hospital for treatment, while others involved in the accident reportedly escaped with minor injuries.

The unsettling moment was captured on surveillance cameras, and the video has since gone viral across social media platforms. The clip shows the car parked calmly at first. Moments later, as the driver gets into the seat with the door still open, the vehicle unexpectedly moves in reverse and crashes into surrounding traffic.

As per a report by TV9, the car being an automatic vehicle may have played a role in the incident. It is suspected that the driver may have mistaken the accelerator for the brake, causing the car to surge forward initially and hit a railing, possibly endangering a pedestrian as well. The situation worsened when the door remained open and the vehicle rolled back, leading to the collision with other road users.

Another post on X (formerly Twitter) claimed that the car door was not properly closed and that the vehicle moved slightly forward before rolling backwards. Whether this was due to a mechanical fault or human error is still under investigation.

The viral CCTV clip triggered strong reactions online, with users sharing their own theories and opinions. One user questioned the mechanics, writing, “How did it move backwards? It had to be in reverse gear. If not, the car maker should be sued.”

Another commented, “Learn to drive manual first. Then switch to anything later if you wish.”

A third remarked, “An automatic car does not move by itself. The driver messed up.”

Some users pointed to technology, saying, “This is why ADAS Level 2 is needed on Indian roads.”

Others felt the cause was simple human error, with one post reading, “It looks like the car was already in reverse and the accelerator was pressed by mistake.”

A harsher reaction stated, “Automatic cars have made people careless. They drive them like toys.”

Following the incident, Udupi traffic police registered a case and have launched an investigation to determine exactly how the vehicle went out of control. Authorities are examining CCTV footage and vehicle details to establish whether the crash was caused by a mechanical malfunction or driver negligence.
