Pune: Nine Hills Society At NIBM Annex In Mohamadwadi Sets Sustainability Benchmark By Processing 600 kg Wet Waste Daily
Pune, January 10, 2026: Nine Hills Society, located on Gule Patil Road near Cloud 9, in Mohamadwadi has achieved a significant milestone in environmental management by successfully processing around 600 kilograms of wet waste every day through on-site composting.
The initiative aligns with the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) waste management guidelines and stands as a model for sustainable living in urban residential communities.
The transformation follows the revival of the society’s composting machine, which had earlier remained non-functional, posing challenges in wet waste disposal. With focused efforts by the managing committee and residents, the machine was repaired and restarted, leading to a complete overhaul of the society’s waste management system.
Cyrus Shroff, Secretary, Nine Hills Society says, “The society’s garbage processing area has undergone a visible change. Proper waste segregation is now ensured through organised wire-mesh storage units, eliminating foul odours and improving overall hygiene. The green Ecoman unit efficiently converts organic waste into nutrient-rich compost on a daily basis.”
The compost generated is reused within the society to nourish gardens and plants, creating a self-sustaining, local circular economy. Residents can now see their kitchen waste being transformed into compost that enhances the green cover within the premises.
Nine Hills Society’s initiative highlights how collective responsibility and timely maintenance of infrastructure can turn a regulatory requirement into an environmental success story. As cities like Pune continue to face growing waste management challenges, the society’s achievement demonstrates that effective solutions can begin at the community level, offering a practical and replicable model for other housing societies to follow.
