Action taken after victim’s viral social media post exposes taxi scam near Mumbai International Airport

Mumbai Police have arrested a 50-year-old cab driver for allegedly cheating a US national by charging her ₹18,000 for a short 400-metre ride to a five-star hotel near Mumbai International Airport. The accused was taken into custody by Sahar police following a suo motu FIR after the incident gained widespread attention on social media.

According to police, the incident occurred on January 12, when the woman arrived in Mumbai from the United States. She hired a taxi from the airport to reach a hotel located just a few hundred metres away. Instead of taking the direct route, the driver allegedly drove her around Andheri (East) for nearly 20 minutes before dropping her at the same hotel and charging her $200, equivalent to around ₹18,000.

The matter came to light on January 26, when the woman created an account on X (formerly Twitter) and shared details of her experience, including the taxi registration number. Her post quickly went viral, garnering over 1.15 lakh views and triggering public outrage. Despite the delay of nearly two weeks since the incident, police traced the vehicle using the registration details mentioned in the post and identified the accused.

Sahar police registered a first information report on January 27 after the foreign national did not immediately respond to police outreach. The accused was arrested within three hours of the FIR being filed. His taxi has been seized, and police have initiated the process of sending his details to the Regional Transport Office for cancellation of his driving licence.

Police officials said they are also searching for an accomplice who allegedly helped the driver execute the scam. Investigators are examining whether the accused has been involved in similar cases targeting tourists arriving at the airport.

The case has once again highlighted concerns over taxi frauds near Mumbai International Airport, particularly involving foreign nationals unfamiliar with local routes and fare structures. In recent months, multiple incidents of overcharging and cheating of passengers have been reported, prompting calls for stricter enforcement and better monitoring.

Experts have suggested installing clearer signage, improving access to authorised taxi counters, and strengthening help desks at the airport to protect tourists from such scams. They have also stressed the need for quicker grievance redressal mechanisms for foreign visitors.

Police have reiterated that tourists who suspect foul play should immediately inform airport authorities, hotel staff or local police, rather than delaying complaints. Further investigation in the case is ongoing.
