Pune, January 30, 2026: In a bid to strengthen the city’s sanitation and waste management system, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has appealed to residents to strictly segregate household waste into four categories—wet, dry, domestic hazardous, and sanitary waste—before handing it over to municipal collection vehicles.

To ensure wider public participation, the PCMC Health Department has intensified awareness campaigns across the city. These initiatives are being carried out under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Shravan Hardikar and Additional Commissioner Vijaykumar Khorate, with Deputy Commissioner Dr Pradeep Thengal and Assistant Commissioner Amit Pandit overseeing implementation at the ward level.

As part of the campaign, door-to-door outreach, display boards, pamphlets, social media messaging, and awareness programmes with the support of non-governmental organisations are being conducted to educate citizens about the importance of waste segregation.

Civic officials said proper segregation enables scientific processing of waste, increases recycling, reduces pressure on landfills, and supports environmental conservation. It also helps curb foul odour, garbage accumulation, and pollution in residential areas. Citizens have been urged to hand over segregated waste to the municipal ‘ghantagadi’ (garbage collection vehicle) on time and avoid dumping waste in open spaces.

Waste Segregation Guidelines:

  • Wet waste: Leftover food, vegetable waste, fruit peels — dispose of in green bins.
  • Dry waste: Paper, plastic, glass, metal items — dispose of in blue bins.
  • Domestic hazardous waste: Batteries, tube lights/bulbs, medicine remnants, chemical products — dispose of in black bins.
  • Sanitary waste: Sanitary napkins, diapers, medical-use materials — dispose of in red bins.

Highlighting the importance of the initiative, Dr Pradeep Thengal, Deputy Commissioner, PCMC, said waste segregation is a fundamental requirement for maintaining city cleanliness and appealed to residents to cooperate fully by handing over waste in the prescribed manner.
