Rajpal Yadav Taken to Tihar Jail After Delhi High Court Denies Further Relief in Cheque Bounce Case
Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav was sent to Tihar Jail on Thursday after the Delhi High Court declined to grant him any additional relief in long-pending cheque bounce cases. Following the court’s refusal to extend the surrender deadline, the actor presented himself before jail authorities later in the day, marking a decisive turn in a legal battle that has stretched over several years.
According to sources quoted by news agency PTI, Rajpal Yadav surrendered before the Tihar Jail authorities at around 4 pm. A jail official confirmed that standard procedures would now be followed as per protocol.
Court Rejects Plea for More Time
A day earlier, the Delhi High Court had firmly refused to grant Rajpal Yadav extra time to surrender. The actor’s legal counsel informed the court that ₹50 lakh had been arranged and requested a one-week extension to complete the payment process. However, the court was not persuaded by the plea.
Rajpal had been directed to surrender by 4 pm on Wednesday, February 2. Responding to his request for more time, the High Court made it clear that no special treatment could be given based on profession or background. The court observed that leniency cannot be stretched indefinitely, especially in cases where repeated commitments to comply with court orders have not been honored.
Background of the Case
The legal matter stems from a complaint filed by M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd against Rajpal Yadav and his wife. The company alleged that multiple cheques issued by the couple had bounced and that the outstanding dues were never repaid.
In 2018, a magistrate’s court in Delhi found Rajpal Yadav and his wife guilty in the cheque bounce cases and sentenced the actor to six months of imprisonment. This conviction was later upheld by a sessions court in 2019. The couple subsequently challenged the verdict before the Delhi High Court.
Temporary Relief and Repeated Non-Compliance
In June 2024, the High Court had temporarily suspended the conviction, encouraging the actor to take “sincere and genuine steps” toward resolving the dispute amicably with the complainant. The suspension was aimed at allowing space for a possible settlement.
However, the situation changed when the court noted that Rajpal Yadav had repeatedly failed to adhere to the undertakings given to repay the amount. Observing continuous non-compliance, the High Court on February 2 ordered the actor to surrender, bringing the temporary relief to an end.
