Mumbai–Sindhudurg Ro-Ro Ferry to Slash Travel Time by Half: Route, Launch Plan, Ticket Cost and Key Details
Reaching the Konkan coast from Mumbai may soon become far quicker and far more comfortable than the usual long highway drive. A proposed Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) ferry service between Mumbai and Vijaydurg in Sindhudurg district is expected to cut travel time almost by half, offering a practical sea-based alternative for thousands of regular travellers.
The Maharashtra Maritime Board has taken the initiative to introduce this sea link between Mumbai and Vijaydurg. The project was earlier scheduled to begin in August 2025, with infrastructure development already planned at both ends. However, technical challenges prevented the launch at that time, delaying the much-anticipated service.
Fresh movement on the project has now begun. Authorities have issued tenders to appoint a contractor who will operate the Ro-Ro ferry on a trial basis for one month. The tender process is expected to be completed by March 2026, and operations are likely to commence in April 2026. If the trial run proves successful, the service will be made permanent.
Currently, travelling by road from Mumbai to Sindhudurg takes around 10 to 12 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. Congestion, especially during peak travel seasons and festivals, often stretches the journey even further. To address this issue, water transport has been proposed as a faster and more efficient option. Once operational, the Ro-Ro ferry is expected to complete the Mumbai–Vijaydurg journey in approximately six hours.
The service will operate from Bhaucha Dhakka (Ferry Wharf) in Mumbai and connect directly to Vijaydurg in Sindhudurg district along the Konkan coastline. Necessary groundwork has already been carried out. The passenger jetty at Vijaydurg has been converted into a Ro-Ro jetty to accommodate vehicles, and required facilities have also been developed at the Mumbai terminal.
Ticket fares and the detailed timetable have not yet been officially announced. Based on earlier indications, the expected fare may be around ₹6,000 for four-wheelers and about ₹1,000 for two-wheelers, although these rates could change before final confirmation.
Once launched, this ferry service is likely to significantly improve connectivity between Mumbai and the Konkan region. Faster travel could benefit regular commuters, boost tourism, and support local businesses. The immediate focus now remains on the completion of the tender process, as its outcome will determine how soon this long-awaited coastal transport service becomes a reality.
