Suryakumar Yadav: Even If India Lifts the T20 World Cup, Surya’s Australia Dream May Stay Unfulfilled

Suryakumar Yadav has never hidden his competitive fire, especially when it comes to Australia. The Indian T20 captain, who was part of the squad that stormed into the 2023 ODI World Cup final with ten straight wins before falling short against Australia in Ahmedabad, still carries that unfinished business in his heart. And now, circumstances in the T20 World Cup have added a fresh twist to that story.

As the group stage of the 2026 T20 World Cup nears its conclusion, seven of the eight Super 8 spots have already been sealed. With that, India’s schedule for the next phase is also locked in. The defending champions are once again among the tournament favourites, and expectations are naturally high.

Before the tournament began, during New Zealand’s tour of India, Suryakumar was asked a hypothetical but intriguing question: if India were to reach the 2026 T20 World Cup final, which opponent and venue would he choose?

Without hesitation, he replied: Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The answer immediately brought back memories of November 19, 2023 — the ODI World Cup final at the same venue where India’s dream run ended at the hands of the Australians. For Suryakumar, a rematch on the grandest stage of T20 cricket would represent the perfect opportunity to rewrite that chapter.

India and Australia have crossed paths several times since that painful defeat. India beat Australia by 24 runs in the Super Eight stage of the previous T20 World Cup and later defeated them by four wickets in the semifinal of this year’s Champions Trophy. Despite those victories — and despite India having won two ICC titles since the 2023 final — the desire to conquer Australia in a summit clash still lingers within the squad.

India Women’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur echoed similar sentiments during the official event announcing the 2026 T20 World Cup schedule and venues in Mumbai. Her team had also overcome Australia in a recent World Cup semifinal on their way to the title. She admitted that Australia remains the one opponent players especially want to defeat, because certain matches leave a lasting mark.

However, the latest developments in the ongoing tournament may prevent that dream showdown from ever happening. A rain-affected match between Zimbabwe and Ireland resulted in both teams sharing a point. That outcome led to Australia’s elimination from the competition at the group stage. With Australia out, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe advanced to the Super 8 phase.

The tournament draw had placed defending champions India in Group A alongside Pakistan, USA, Netherlands and Namibia, while Australia were in Group B with Sri Lanka, Ireland, Zimbabwe and Oman. Now, with the Super 8 lineup nearly confirmed, India’s next-stage group includes West Indies, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

If Australia cannot progress further, a final between India and their fiercest recent rivals becomes impossible — regardless of how far India go. That means even if Suryakumar Yadav leads his side to another T20 World Cup trophy, the specific dream of facing Australia in a title clash at Ahmedabad will remain out of reach.

Cricket often scripts dramatic rivalries, but sometimes destiny has other plans. For Surya, the hunger to settle scores with Australia on the biggest stage is clear — yet for now, that chapter may have to wait.
