Pune electricity users with smart/TOD meters save up to ₹0.80 per unit on daytime consumption.

Electricity consumers in the Pune circle of MSEDCL (Mahavitaran) are seeing significant savings on their power bills thanks to the rollout of smart and Time-of-Day (TOD) meters.

Under the TOD system, households and businesses that spread their electricity use throughout the day — especially between morning and late afternoon — receive a discount of 80 paise per unit compared with standard billing rates for daytime consumption. This discount is credited directly to the monthly electricity bills of eligible customers.

Huge Savings Across Pune

According to the reports:

  • Nearly 9 lakh 84 thousand customers in the Pune division have already been equipped with modern smart/TOD meters.
  • From July 2025 to January 2026, these consumers have collectively saved around ₹8.5 crore through TOD discounts.

The smart meters are being installed free of cost by Mahavitaran, and customers are encouraged to cooperate in the installation. These meters also improve accuracy and help consumers take advantage of cheaper daytime power, which increasingly comes from solar energy sources.

Why The Discount Is Offered

Mahavitaran says the share of solar and daytime electricity in its supply mix is growing. Solar power generated during daylight hours is generally cheaper than other forms of electricity. By offering a TOD discount, the utility encourages customers to use more power during these lower-cost periods, which helps balance grid demand and reduces peak load pressure.

In the future, the discount could increase to up to ₹1 per unit, the reports note, provided the consumer has a TOD-enabled meter.

What It Means For Consumers

  • Smart/TOD meters help consumers save money on daytime power usage.
  • The installation is free and benefits are automatically reflected in bills.
  • Large numbers of Pune residents have already benefited through reduced electricity costs.

Residents who have yet to receive a smart meter can contact MSEDCL to check eligibility and installation status.
