Pune: Citizens’ Initiative Brings First Public Garden To Kharadi, Work To Begin Soon
Pune, March 16, 2026: In a notable example of citizen-led urban development, the Kharadi area of Pune is set to get its first dedicated public garden and green zone, addressing a long-standing demand for accessible open spaces in one of the city’s fastest-growing neighbourhoods.
The initiative has been led by PMCWarriors, a group of citizens and working professionals actively working on civic issues across the city in coordination with the Pune Municipal Corporation. After months of follow-ups, documentation and coordination with various civic departments, the effort culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the PMC Garden Department in October 2025. With the required procedures now completed, groundwork for the garden is expected to begin soon.
Describing the journey as both challenging and rewarding, Jayesh Maduskar, Chairman of Nyati Elysia Cronus in Kharadi and a member of PMCWarriors, said the project required sustained citizen participation and consistent engagement with civic authorities.
The initiative involved coordination with several PMC departments, including the Estate Department and Garden Department, to complete land identification, approvals and the transfer process required for the development of the public space.
Ashok Ghorpade while speaking to Pune Pulse stated that PMC garden department will develop the garden. The work will begin shortly.
PMC Warriors acknowledged the support of PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, Mayor Manjusha Nagpure, Ashok Ghorpade, Superintending Officer of the Garden Department, along with Preeti Prasad and Chandrakant Gawali, whose assistance helped the project move forward at various stages.
Maduskar also expressed appreciation to Naval Kishore Ram, Commissioner of the Pune Municipal Corporation, for encouraging citizen-driven initiatives and supporting collaborative efforts aimed at improving urban livability.
Beyond administrative approvals, PMCWarriors also worked closely with the implementing agency on the garden design, landscaping plans and sustainable water management systems, ensuring that the upcoming space will be environmentally responsible and accessible to residents of all age groups.
Retired Brig. Pramod Singh, a member of PMCWarriors, said the initiative highlights the importance of constructive citizen participation. He noted that when citizens and the administration work together with commitment and purpose, meaningful urban transformation becomes possible.
Another member of PMCWarriors, Ram Sanap, said the group’s vision was to create a much-needed green breathing space for residents of Kharadi, adding that the long-awaited project is now finally becoming a reality.
The group expressed confidence that continued support from newly elected corporators will strengthen cooperation between citizens and civic authorities, enabling more such community-driven initiatives across Kharadi and Pune.
Once completed, the upcoming garden is expected to serve as a green oasis for residents, while also symbolising the impact of community unity and citizen-led civic action.
