Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the much-awaited Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Metro corridor will begin operations in phases starting May, aiming to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

The long-awaited Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Metro corridor in Pune will be launched in two phases starting from May, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced while inaugurating Metro Bhavan, the headquarters of MahaMetro.

The Chief Minister said the metro corridor will significantly improve urban mobility in Pune and reduce traffic congestion in the rapidly growing IT and industrial hub.

According to officials, the first phase of the corridor from Hinjewadi to Balewadi, will be inaugurated in May. This stretch will include 12 metro stations. The second phase, which connects Balewadi to Shivajinagar and includes 11 stations, is expected to be launched in July.

The entire Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar metro corridor is about 23 kilometres long and is being developed by Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited. The project is being implemented by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).

Speaking at the event, Fadnavis said expansion of metro services remains one of the top priorities of the Maharashtra government. He highlighted that the state has been focusing on strengthening urban transport systems to support economic growth and reduce congestion in major cities.

“We had planned a metro network of 80 kilometres in Pune. Work on around 55 kilometres is now nearing completion,” the Chief Minister said.

He added that the government aims to develop an extensive metro network in the Pune metropolitan region in the coming years. “In the future, a 200-kilometre metro network will be developed in Pune. We have instructed MahaMetro to prepare a comprehensive plan for this expansion,” he said.

The Chief Minister also announced plans to extend the metro network to the proposed Purandar international airport to further strengthen connectivity for the city.

Highlighting the growing popularity of metro services in Pune, Fadnavis said that the system has already been widely accepted by commuters. “Around 2.5 lakh passengers use metro services daily. During the Ganesh festival, the number crossed five lakh passengers in a day,” he said.

The Chief Minister also noted that Maharashtra was the first state in India to formulate a policy for Global Capacity Centres (GCC), adding that strong urban mobility infrastructure is essential to support the state’s economic and technological growth.

Officials said the Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar metro corridor will play a crucial role in connecting the major IT hub of Hinjewadi with central Pune, making daily travel easier for thousands of commuters working in the technology parks and business districts across the region.
