Pimpri Chinchwad, March 18, 2026: Amid rising air pollution levels in Pimpri Chinchwad, Mayor Ravi Landge has taken a firm stance and directed the civic administration to implement comprehensive and immediate measures to improve the Air Quality Index (AQI).

The directives follow a high-level meeting held on March 15, 2026, with environmental organizations, experts, and key stakeholders, where several recommendations were discussed. Based on these inputs, the Mayor has issued strict instructions to the Municipal Commissioner to ensure urgent and effective implementation.

Taking serious note of the deteriorating AQI caused by rapid industrialisation, increasing vehicular traffic, construction dust, and incidents of waste burning, the Mayor has ordered clear accountability and result-oriented execution from all concerned departments.

Key measures include increasing the number of air quality monitoring stations across the city, ensuring real-time AQI data is accessible to citizens, and setting up special monitoring systems in pollution-sensitive zones.

To tackle vehicular pollution, the administration has been instructed to strengthen intelligent traffic management systems, promote the use of public transport, encourage electric vehicles, and take strict action against old and polluting vehicles.

In the industrial sector, the Mayor has directed regular inspections, mandatory pollution control mechanisms, and stringent penalties for violations. Construction sites must implement green nets and dust barriers, while authorities have been told to ensure regular road cleaning and water sprinkling to control dust pollution. A complete ban on waste burning has also been enforced, with strict penalties for offenders.

Focusing on long-term environmental sustainability, the Mayor has emphasized large-scale tree plantation drives, development of green belts, urban forests, and oxygen parks. Additionally, authorities have been instructed to immediately implement the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) if AQI levels reach critical levels.

“Clean and safe air is the fundamental right of every citizen. Improving AQI is not just the administration’s responsibility but a collective duty of the entire city. However, no negligence will be tolerated in this matter,” Mayor Landge stated, urging both officials and citizens to actively participate in the initiative.

He further stressed that both short-term and long-term strategies are essential to effectively control air pollution, adding that public health remains the top priority.

The Mayor has also directed all departments to conduct regular review meetings and submit detailed Action Taken Reports within a stipulated timeframe, ensuring strict monitoring and accountability.

These measures aim to safeguard public health, enhance environmental protection, and promote sustainable urban development in the city.
