IMD warns of gusty winds up to 60 kmph, thunderstorms and unseasonal rain across multiple regions
Maharashtra, March 31: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a major weather alert for Maharashtra, forecasting stormy winds, thunderstorms, and possible hailstorms across the state on April 1. A total of 33 districts are under alert, including an Orange Alert for 7 districts and a Yellow Alert for 27 districts.
The state has already witnessed intense unseasonal rainfall in March, and the unsettled weather is expected to continue into the first week of April.
In the Konkan region, including Mumbai and Palghar, no official alert has been issued. However, cloudy skies with light to moderate rainfall are likely. Districts such as Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg are under a Yellow Alert, with forecasts of thunderstorms, lightning, and winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph.
In West Maharashtra, Pune and Satara districts have been placed under an Orange Alert, with heavy rainfall and strong winds expected at speeds of 50–60 kmph. Sangli, Solapur, and Kolhapur are under a Yellow Alert, with moderate rainfall likely. The IMD has also warned of possible hailstorms in isolated areas.
For North Maharashtra, Nashik and Ahilyanagar districts are under an Orange Alert, while Jalgaon, Dhule, and Nandurbar fall under a Yellow Alert. Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are expected, with sudden weather changes likely post-afternoon.
In the Marathwada region, Latur and Dharashiv are under an Orange Alert, with strong winds reaching 50–60 kmph. Districts including Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Parbhani, Beed, Hingoli, and Nanded are under a Yellow Alert. Lightning and strong winds may pose risks to standing crops.
Meanwhile, in Vidarbha, districts such as Akola, Amravati, Wardha, Gondia, Nagpur, Gadchiroli, Buldhana, Chandrapur, Bhandara, and Washim are under a Yellow Alert. Yavatmal has been placed under an Orange Alert, with similar forecasts of strong winds and thunderstorms.
Overall, the IMD has cautioned that unstable weather conditions are likely to persist across Maharashtra over the next few days. Citizens have been advised to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel during adverse conditions, and farmers are urged to take necessary precautions to protect crops.
