Lower berths are in high demand, especially among senior citizens and women. Here’s how you can improve your chances of securing one while booking your ticket.

Travelling on a lower berth in trains is preferred by many passengers, particularly senior citizens, as it offers greater comfort and ease of access. However, passengers often end up with middle or upper berths, leading to inconvenience. While many blame the system, the issue can sometimes be due to small mistakes made during ticket booking.

What Are the Rules for Lower Berth Allocation?
According to Indian Railways, there is a dedicated quota for lower berths reserved for senior citizens—men aged 60 and above and women aged 58 and above. Additionally, women aged 45 and above are also eligible under this quota. This provision applies across Sleeper and AC classes, although the number of reserved seats may vary by class.

How to Increase Your Chances of Getting a Lower Berth

  • Always select the “Senior Citizen” option while booking tickets if applicable.
  • Typically, only 1 or 2 senior citizens per PNR can benefit from the lower berth quota.
  • If 3 or 4 senior citizens are booked under a single PNR, the chances of getting lower berths for all passengers decrease.

When You May Not Get a Lower Berth

  • If the lower berth quota is already filled at the time of booking.
  • If tickets are booked at the last minute.
  • If the quota for women or pregnant passengers has already been exhausted.

Lower berths are allotted based on availability. In some cases, if seats become vacant later due to cancellations, the system may automatically reassign a lower berth to eligible passengers.

To improve your chances, it is crucial to choose the correct booking options and plan your travel in advance.
