India delivered its best-ever performance at the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad 2026, with Shreya Mundhada winning a historic gold medal and the team securing sixth place worldwide.

India has registered a landmark achievement in global mathematics competitions after Shreya Mundhada won the country’s first-ever gold medal at the 15th European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) 2026, held in Bordeaux, France from April 9 to April 15.

The result marks a major milestone for Indian students in international Olympiads and highlights the growing strength of girls in advanced mathematics.

Historic Moment For India

Shreya’s medal is the first gold ever won by an Indian contestant at EGMO since the country began participating as a guest nation in 2015.

India also recorded its best-ever team ranking, finishing 6th among 67 participating countries.

The four-member Indian team secured a total of:

One Gold Medal
One Silver Medal
One Bronze Medal

This performance is being seen as one of India’s strongest showings at any international mathematics competition for girls.

PM Modi Praises Achievement

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the success during the 133rd episode of Mann Ki Baat, bringing national attention to the young achiever’s performance.

The recognition has sparked appreciation across academic circles and among students preparing for competitive exams.

Father Speaks On Girls’ Education

Reacting to the honour, Shreya’s father Shantanu Mundhada said:

“It is absolutely true that many people still do not pay enough attention to girls’ education or their aspirations compared to boys.”

He added that conditions are improving and more families are now encouraging daughters to study and pursue their ambitions.

“We need to encourage them, motivate them, and ensure they pay proper attention.”

How India Prepared

Officials credited the success to structured training through the EGMO Training Camp, where students receive advanced coaching from former Olympians, researchers and subject experts.

The programme is supported by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE-TIFR) and the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) under the Department of Atomic Energy.

Why This Matters

The achievement is significant not only because of the medal tally, but because it signals India’s rising presence in elite global academic contests.

It also sends a powerful message that girls from India are competing — and winning — on the world stage in highly challenging STEM fields.

Bigger Inspiration

For thousands of students across the country, Shreya Mundhada’s victory is more than a medal story. It is proof that talent, discipline and opportunity can place Indian students among the best minds in the world.
