New expressway stretch to cut travel time by up to 30 minutes; strict speed limits and phased vehicle access announced

Travel between Mumbai and Pune is set to become faster and smoother as the much-awaited Missing Link on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway opens from May 1. The new stretch is expected to reduce the distance by around 6 km and save nearly 20–30 minutes of travel time, offering a major relief to daily commuters and travellers.

The 13.3-km Missing Link will initially allow only light motor vehicles and passenger vehicles such as buses. Heavy goods vehicles will not be permitted in the first phase, which will continue for several months. Authorities will review traffic and safety conditions before allowing additional vehicle categories later.

Vehicles carrying hazardous materials like flammable or explosive goods will be completely banned from using this route due to safety concerns.

The government has fixed clear speed limits to ensure safety on the new high-speed corridor:

  • Light motor vehicles (cars): up to 100 kmph
  • Buses and passenger vehicles: up to 80 kmph

Strict action will be taken against those violating these limits, especially inside tunnel sections where safety is critical.

Traffic on the Missing Link will be introduced in phases. From May 1 to around October, only cars and buses will be allowed. After an initial observation period, authorities may decide whether to allow goods vehicles on the route.

This phased approach has been planned to ensure smoother traffic flow and minimise risks on the newly constructed stretch.

The Missing Link bypasses the accident-prone ghat section, making travel not just faster but significantly safer. The project includes long tunnels and a cable-stayed bridge, designed to handle traffic more efficiently and reduce congestion.

Officials believe this upgrade will ease traffic pressure on the existing route, reduce accidents, and improve overall travel experience between the two cities.

Once fully operational, the Missing Link is expected to transform the Mumbai-Pune journey by making it shorter, quicker, and more predictable. For frequent travellers, especially during peak hours and weekends, the time savings could be even higher.
