Stock Markets Holiday on May 1 for Maharashtra Day; Full 2026 Holiday Calendar and Trading Details Inside
Investors across India will see a brief pause in trading activity as domestic stock exchanges shut operations on May 1, 2026, in observance of Maharashtra Day. Both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will remain closed for the entire day, halting transactions across all major segments.
Complete Trading Halt Across Segments
On this state holiday, no trading will take place in equities, equity derivatives, currency derivatives, securities lending and borrowing (SLB), or electronic gold receipts (EGR). Essentially, all market-linked activity on NSE and BSE will stay suspended for the day.

However, the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will follow a slightly different schedule. While the morning session will remain closed, trading will resume later in the day during the evening session, running from 5:00 PM to 11:30 PM.

Market Performance on April 30
Ahead of the holiday, Indian benchmark indices ended Thursday’s session on a weak note. The 30-share Sensex dropped by 582.86 points (0.75%) to settle at 76,913.50. During the day, it had fallen sharply by over 1,200 points before recovering some losses in later trading hours.
Similarly, the Nifty 50 index declined by 180.10 points (0.74%), closing at 23,997.55. The dip in markets was attributed to rising crude oil prices, subdued global cues, and continued foreign institutional investor outflows, which weighed on overall sentiment.
