May 1, 2026: May 2026 is shaping up to be a blockbuster month for movie enthusiasts, with a wide range of films from Bollywood, Hollywood, and South Indian cinema hitting theatres. Audiences can expect a mix of historical dramas, romance, thrillers, horror, and comedy, leading to a major box office clash.

The month kicked off with a strong start on Maharashtra Day with the release of Raja Shivaji. Actor Riteish Deshmukh portrays Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the historical drama, which he has also directed and written. The film features prominent actors like Sanjay Dutt and Abhishek Bachchan, with Salman Khan appearing in a special role.


Another major release generating buzz is Patriot, starring Malayalam superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal. The film marks their reunion after 18 years and is a political spy thriller made on a budget exceeding ₹125 crore. Early expectations suggest a strong opening at the box office.

Adding to the mix, Aamir Khan Productions released Ek Din on May 1, marking Sai Pallavi’s debut in Hindi cinema. The film is an adaptation of a Thai love story set in Hokkaido, Japan, tailored for Indian audiences.

On May 8, audiences will see a unique concept film, The Sheep Detectives, where a flock of sheep investigates the murder of their shepherd.
Mid-month releases on May 15 include the action-packed Mortal Kombat 2, featuring Karl Urban as Johnny Cage. The same day also brings comedy entertainer Pati Patni Aur Woh 2, starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Sara Ali Khan, and Rakul Preet Singh.
The biggest highlight of the month is Drishyam 3, set to release on May 21. Mohanlal returns as Georgekutty in the highly anticipated sequel. The teaser hints at new twists, with past secrets resurfacing and the protagonist facing fresh challenges.
