Complaint includes cheating and SC/ST Act allegations linked to film investment dispute

Bollywood music composer and lyricist Palash Muchhal has landed in fresh legal trouble after a case was registered against him at Sangli City Police Station in Maharashtra. The case includes allegations of cheating and offences under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The complaint has been filed by actor-producer Vigyan Prakash Mane, a resident of Sangli, who alleged that Muchhal took money from him in connection with a film project and later failed to return the amount. According to the complaint, the dispute is linked to the film “Nazariya”.

Police officials said Mane alleged that Palash Muchhal had collected around ₹25 lakh from him by promising investment and production-related involvement in the project. However, after the film was not completed and the money was allegedly not returned, the matter escalated.

As per the complaint, an argument reportedly took place on November 22, 2025, near a toll plaza on the Sangli-Ashta road when Mane again demanded the money back. Mane has alleged that during the altercation, caste-based abuse was directed at him, following which he approached the police.

Based on the complaint, Sangli City Police have registered a case against Palash Muchhal under provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act along with relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to criminal intimidation and assault. Police said further investigation into the matter is currently underway.

The controversy has drawn additional attention because Vigyan Mane is reportedly known as a childhood friend of Indian women’s cricketer Smriti Mandhana, who was earlier linked to Palash Muchhal in media reports.

Meanwhile, Palash Muchhal has denied all allegations made against him. Earlier, he had termed the accusations “false and baseless” and claimed they were intended to damage his and his family’s social reputation. Through his lawyer, Shreyansh Mithare, Muchhal had also reportedly sent a legal notice of ₹10 crore to Vigyan Mane over the allegations.

In a related development, the Bombay High Court had previously granted interim relief to Muchhal by restraining defamatory statements against him. The court had reportedly observed that while professional disputes may exist, making personal allegations without basis would be inappropriate.

The latest police action, however, could intensify the legal battle between the two sides. Authorities have not yet made any arrests in the matter, and investigators are currently collecting statements and additional evidence related to the complaint.

The case has once again brought Palash Muchhal into the spotlight, months after he had already been making headlines over personal and professional controversies.
