Pune, May 6, 2026: In a dramatic late-evening rescue, a 35-year-old tourist who fell nearly 150 to 170 feet into a deep gorge at Sinhagad Fort was safely rescued after regaining consciousness and calling the emergency helpline 112.

The tourist, Yogesh Mohan Shitole (35), a resident of Shirur, had visited the fort for a leisure trek. Around 4:30 pm to 5:00 pm, he moved towards Hawa Point on the western edge to capture sunset views. However, he reportedly slipped on grass near the cliff edge and plunged into the valley below.

Officials said Shitole lost consciousness immediately after the fall. After nearly two to three hours, between 7:00 pm and 7:30 pm, he regained consciousness despite injuries and managed to dial 112, alerting authorities about his location deep inside the gorge.

Acting swiftly, the team from Haveli Police Station led by Police Inspector Aniket Kale coordinated with a disaster response team to launch a rescue operation. Despite darkness and difficult terrain, rescuers descended into the valley using ropes and safety equipment.

After a challenging operation, Shitole was brought back safely and shifted to a private hospital for treatment. His family members were informed promptly.

Local volunteers including Tanaji Bhosale, Santosh Bhagat, Ganesh Sapkal, Sanjay Chorghe, Nana Jarande, Krishna Margale, Uttam Pisal, and Vaibhav Bhosale assisted police personnel Aniket Kale and Pravin Telwade in the rescue effort.

“This was a time-critical operation. The victim’s presence of mind in calling 112 proved crucial. Despite fading light and tough terrain, the team ensured a safe rescue,” said Inspector Aniket Kale.

The incident highlights the risks of venturing close to cliff edges at Sinhagad Fort, especially during slippery conditions. Authorities have urged tourists to exercise caution while visiting such high-risk areas.
