Maharashtra Citizens Can Now Register Wills At Any Sub-Registrar Office For Rs 100
Mumbai, May 7, 2026: Citizens across Maharashtra can now register their wills at any of the state’s 517 sub-registrar offices by paying a registration fee of just Rs 100, according to officials from the registration department.
Authorities said wills differ from other property-related documents because they are not bound by the usual four-month deadline for registration. A will can be submitted for registration at any time after it has been executed.

A will is a legal document through which an individual specifies how their self-acquired movable or immovable assets, or their share in ancestral property, should be distributed after their death. Although registration of a will is not compulsory under Indian law, officials said it is advisable as it strengthens legal validity and helps prevent disputes among family members and legal heirs.

Formal registration of a will helps preserve the person’s intentions and reduces the possibility of future legal conflicts. The public response to the facility has improved due to the convenience and flexibility offered under the system.
In situations where a will has not been registered before the death of the person, the executor named in the document or a claimant can still apply for registration later. The sub-registrar then verifies the execution of the will, confirms the death of the individual and checks the applicant’s legal authority before completing the process.
Documents generally required for such registration include the death certificate, affidavits, witness statements and probate or court orders wherever applicable.
The department has also introduced the facility of depositing a sealed will. Under this option, a will can be submitted in a sealed cover to the district registrar by the individual or an authorised representative for Rs 100. The sealed document can be withdrawn during the person’s lifetime upon payment of the same fee. After the person’s death, the will may be opened following an application and verification process, after which certified copies can be issued.
Officials believe the system offers citizens both confidentiality and legal protection while ensuring smoother transfer of property ownership.
